Kristin Coffelt October 13, 2025

Some of the best fall foliage drives in central Iowa take you through picturesque state parks, scenic byways, and local parks around the Des Moines area.

Scenic drive and byways

This is one of the most iconic fall drives in the region. The route features the famous covered bridges of Madison County, with amazing foliage surrounding the classic Iowa landscape.

This historic route offers amazing autumn views of local landscapes as it passes near Des Moines. It is an excellent option for a classic scenic drive.

For a unique view of the foliage, take a fall excursion on this historic railroad. The ride offers vibrant scenery through the Des Moines River Valley, especially during the peak season.

State and Regional Parks

This park is a classic fall destination known for its striking sandstone cliffs and wooded canyons. The winding paths through the forest provide especially vibrant foliage views in early October.

The area surrounding Jester Park, especially the Equestrian Center, is a popular spot for fall colors. It provides an excellent option for a scenic drive or walk along the trails.

The Neal Smith Trail runs along the eastern shore of Saylorville Lake and is a great option for a scenic drive or bike ride. The wooded landscape around the lake offers wonderful views.

This trail offers a truly surreal autumn view from the elevated bridge, which spans the Des Moines River Valley north of Ankeny. While primarily a walking and biking trail, the drive to the parking area and the view from the bridge are perfect for leaf peeping.

Fall colors normally peak in Iowa between the first and third weeks of October. The DNR predicts October 18-25 for central Iowa to be the peak season.
